Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was founded by 12 ‘nontraditional’ undergraduate students on September 19, 1963, on the campus of Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. The fraternity’s founders were older students, some married and military veterans, who wanted to create a more mature representation of fraternity life. The founding of Iota Phi Theta took place against the backdrop of the assassination of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, the historic March on Washington, and the murder of 4 Black girls in the racist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. These were all pivotal events that shaped the founders’ focus on citizenship, leadership, and brotherhood as three of the five core tenets of the fraternity. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was officially inducted into the National Pan-Hellenic Council in February 1997. The official colors of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. are charcoal brown and gilded gold.
